A Peek into the Hybrid MBA Immersion

In late September 2018, the Foster Hybrid MBA Program warmly welcomed the Class of 2020 to the UW Seattle campus for their first in-person Immersion; the event also marked the official start of their Foster MBA program experience.

Each quarter starts with a four to five day in-person Immersion to allow students the invaluable experience of connecting with fellow classmates and faculty. Students also collaborate with their study group to prepare for a successful quarter ahead. From interactive classroom discussions to enriching networking opportunities, Class of 2020 students engaged in a challenging, yet rewarding start to their Hybrid MBA experience.

A Warm Class of 2020 Welcome

Scavenger hunt selfie

63 students, representing nine states from around the country, stepped onto the UW campus and quickly acclimated to Husky life. The Immersion started with a fun scavenger hunt around the Foster School and greater UW campus where students bonded, socialized and learned about key resources available to them.

They then got down to business with the kick-off of their their first quarter courses: Data Analysis, Leading Teams & Organizations, and Financial Reporting & Analysis. The Hybrid MBA Program Immersions are packed with bonding and networking opportunities, but they are also rigorous with coursework. Kicking off the quarter by meeting faculty in an in-person environment is a unique aspect of the program and helps students and faculty to have a stronger connection during the online sessions.

The first day culminated with a celebratory Welcome Reception at Palisade Restaurant; students heard from Senior Associate Director and Foster MBA alumna, Erin Aselas, and Associate Dean of Masters Programs and Hybrid MBA Marketing Faculty, Dan Turner.

Networking Cruise

Students enjoy the Seattle skyline during the Networking Cruise.

The Foster School community is a fundamental component of the Hybrid MBA experience, so Immersion provided many opportunities for students to grow their network. One highlight included a Networking Cruise on the Puget Sound, where students set sail with the Hybrid MBA Class of 2019 to mix, mingle and practice their networking skills – all while enjoying the beautiful Seattle skyline.

New students also connected with their student mentor during Immersion – a 2nd year student from the Class of 2019 cohort who is available to share their experiences and lend advice as the new students adjust to the Hybrid MBA Program.

Husky spirit before the football game – Go Dawgs!

Lastly, why not add some Husky spirit to the mix? Students enjoyed happy hour before the Husky football game and many continued on to the game that night. (The Huskies won!)
