Business Analytics Application Tips You Shouldn’t Miss

1. You are more than a number cruncher. Tell us a story.

Our ideal Master’s of Business Analytics applicant is a bit of a unicorn: you are equally adept at undertaking rigorous quantitative analyses and communicating their complex results to inform decision-making. We want people who are familiar and comfortable with numbers: we expect applicants to be comfortable with statistics, R, Python, Excel, and SQL. But, you also need to be able to translate the numbers into tangible insights that drive influence.

2. Sign up for the GRE or GMAT ASAP*

The GMAT or GRE is probably the most challenging piece to schedule in advance. Be sure to sign up for a GMAT or GRE test date early enough to ensure that your tests scores are sent at least two weeks before the application is due. Official test scores, for the GMAT can take up to 20 days to be sent to schools if they are new. Likewise, initial test scores for the GRE can take 10 to 15 days.

*As an extension on testing flexibility, the MSBA program is allowing GRE or GMAT test-optional for 2023 admissions. Read the admissions FAQ for more info.

3. Don’t send us a first draft. Start your app early.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but some application pieces take time to complete. Don’t wait until the last minute to start. Do yourself a favor and send your first draft to a friend or family member, not us. A fresh set of eyes can make all the difference!

4. Notify your references even earlier.

We require two letters of recommendation in our application. Professional connections are preferred to academic and personal connections should not be used. Enter your recommenders info directly into the application system at least 2 weeks prior to the deadline. Be sure to notify your references before you input them so they are prepared.

It’s your duty as the applicant to make sure recommendations appear in your application portal prior to the deadline, so follow-up with your recommenders early and often.

5. Don’t Be Camera Shy

Our MSBA application process includes a video interview so that we can not only get to know you better, but also asses your communication skills and ability to think on your feet. Interview invitations, instructions, as well as practice questions will be sent to applicants via email after submitting the application.

6. Reach Out

We take the student experience seriously and want to make sure this is the right program for you. That being said, don’t be afraid to reach out to us at [email protected] if you have any questions. We also host a number of events (information sessions, application workshops, etc.) that are available periodically, so check our website for more. Also, connect with our student ambassadors to ask about their MSBA student experience.

Happy Applying!
