Honor Roll: Foster faculty recognized for outstanding achievements in 2019

Faculty members of the UW Foster School of Business have received numerous external awards, appointments and accolades for excellence in research, teaching and leadership in 2019. Here are some highlights:

Bruce Avolio
Mark Pigott Chair in Business Strategic Leadership, Professor of Management

Named the #2 most influential researcher of all time in leadership and #3 in organizational behavior by studies in Leadership Quarterly and Academy of Management Learning and Education.


Chris Barnes
Associate Professor of Management, Evert McCabe Endowed Fellow

Named “Professor of the Week” by Poets & Quants for his intriguing—and encouraging—2019 Journal of Management finding that a healthy sex life at home promotes engagement in the workplace, and vice-versa. Barnes also landed an editorial review board appointment at the journal Sleep Health.


Shi Chen
Assistant Professor of Operations Management

Received the Meritorious Service Award from the journal Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, one of the FT50 journals that Financial Times considers for it’s annual research productivity ranking.


Xiao-Ping Chen
Philip M. Condit Endowed Chair in Business Administration, Professor of Management

Received the 2019 Scholarly Impact Award from SAGE Publishing for the long-term impact of her 2013 Journal of Management paper investigating the link between paternalistic leadership and employee performance.


Abhinav GuptaAbhinav Gupta
Assistant Professor of Strategic Management, Michael G. Foster Endowed Fellow

Named an Ascendant Scholar by the Western Academy of Management for his exemplary early-career record of research, teaching and service.


Tom Lee
Hughes M. Blake Endowed Professor of Management

Received the Excellence in Reviewing Award from Human Resources Management Review.


Kamran Moinzadeh
Michael G. Foster Professor of Supply Chain Management

Appointed to the Supply Chain Thought Leader Roundtable, a body of leading minds in the discipline that convenes annually to identify and explore new trends in the field that might become fertile ground for research and course development.


Emily Cox Pahnke
Associate Professor of Management, Lawrence P. Hughes Faculty Fellow in Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Awarded a multi-year development grant through the Schulze Distinguished Professorship program, which supports outstanding entrepreneurship scholars. Pahnke also was elected representative-at-large of the Strategy Division of the Academy of Management, and appointed to the editorial boards of Administrative Quarterly and Organization Science.


Robert Palmatier
John C. Narver Endowed Professor in Business Administration, Professor of Marketing

Received the Vijay Mahajan Award for Lifetime Contributions to Marketing Strategy from the American Marketing Association, the Louis W. Stern Award for long-term contribution to distribution channels, and the Davidson Award for the best paper in the Journal of Retailing. Palmatier also served as editor of the Journal of Marketing.


Scott ReynoldsScott Reynolds
Professor of Business Ethics, Weyerhaeuser Endowed Faculty Fellow

Awarded the honor of “Master Teacher” of ethics by the Wheatley Institution at BYU, which seeks to spark creative and powerful ideas leading toward practical and constructive solutions to societal issues.


Kira Schabram
Assistant Professor of Management

Received University of Washington Distinguished Teaching Award for her mentoring approach in and out of the classroom, becoming the 13th Foster School faculty member to be recognized with the university’s highest faculty honor.


Jeff Shulman
Marion B. Ingersoll Professor of Marketing

Named associate editor of the influential journal Management Science. The creator and host of the award-winning Seattle Growth Podcast also co-directed and produced the documentary “On the Brink,” chronicling efforts to preserve the soul of Seattle’s changing Central District. The film has screened across the country and aired on PBS.


Elizabeth Umphress
Associate Professor of Management, Evert McCabe Endowed Fellow

Appointed UW Representative in leading the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine’s new Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education. She also was named associate editor of the preeminent Academy of Management Journal.


Elijah Wee
Assistant Professor of Management

Received the Williams A. Owens Scholarly Achievement Award from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), recognizing the impact of his 2017 Academy of Management Journal paper showing how employees can flip the power dynamic and end bullying by an abusive supervisor.


Department of Accounting

Ranked #5 in the world for financial accounting research and #15 overall in this year’s Accounting Rankings compiled by BYU.


Department of Finance and Business Economics

Ranked #11 in the world for research impact in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, climbing 15 places.


Most Productive FacultyDepartment of Management and Organization

Ranked #2 most productive in the nation over the past five years in the most recent Management Department Productivity Ranking.
