Q&A with Lorne Sleipness, MS in Taxation alumnus

Lorne SleipnessLorne Sleipness, Corporate Tax Manager at Grant Thornton LLP, shares his experiences in the UW Foster School’s tax program. He graduated from the program in 2012.

Why did you choose UW’s tax program?

I chose the UW tax program because it has a great reputation in the tax profession, both in the Seattle area and beyond. Further, the most desirable tax jobs require a Masters of Taxation degree.

What advice would you give a student choosing between several tax programs?

I think students choosing among several tax programs should consider the faculty, curriculum and campus environment. I also advise students to reach out to recruiters and professionals in the tax field to see what programs they hire candidates from.

How did your study group impact your experience in the tax program?

My study group during the tax program was incredible. I was able to work much more efficiently and learn so much more by collaborating with others. I also became friends with people from very diverse backgrounds.

What strategies did you use to balance work, life, and the tax program?

I was able to balance a part time job, personal life (including raising three young children with my wife) and the tax program in large part by working efficiently with my study group. We were able to divide up tasks such as reading lengthy court cases and summarizing them for the other members of the group. Since time with extended family and friends was limited, I made a point to make the most of the time I did get with them. But in the end, the tax program is only about 9 months of hard work and the time flies by.

Is there anything else you want to tell prospective students about this program?

The tax program was only 9 months, but it one of the most educational and enjoyable experiences of my life. The lessons learned and camaraderie with other alumni have continued to pay dividends for me years after my time in the program ended.
