RIICC 2021: Students Develop Global Expansion Recommendations for Wise

2021 Undergraduate Winning Team

The Global Business Center was excited to host the 6th Annual Russell Investments International Case Competition (RIICC) – a virtual opportunity for Foster Students to build their global business expertise. During this 72-hour competition, student teams not only developed strategies to address global challenges – they also had to collaborate online and come up with a solution in a short period of time. These skills are increasingly integral to global business careers. Special thanks to Russell Investments for their sponsorship and to our 45 corporate judges and coaches who created a real-world virtual learning opportunity for students.

Students impressed judges with their recommendations based on the case selected and adapted by Dr. Debra Glassman, Faculty Director for the Global Business Center, “TransferWise: Making Sense of Money Transfer,” by Vashudha M, Case Centre, 2019. Students were asked to serve as consultants to Wise in selecting and implementing expansion of their Assets line to another country.  Each team developed a marketing strategy that included target customers, messaging, channels, costs, and metrics for success.

36 teams comprised of 142 UW and regional Community College students tackled the case. Of those teams, the top three Undergraduate Teams moved on to the live final round. We would like to congratulate all finalist teams:

Team 1 (D2): Akshansh Arora, andon Forsythe, Kostyantyn Ryzhkov, William Beeson

Team 2 (A4): Sai Raksha Rayala, Laura Wang, Allie Lee, Daphne D’sa

Team 3 (A2): Everett Buck, Josh Dembowski, Russell Morrison, Zachary Goo

The final round judge panel, made up of local business executives watched final round teams present live. Of the three stellar finalist presentations, Team 2 took home the title of 2021 Russell Investments International Case Competition champions and $1,000. Team 1 took 2nd place and won a $400 prize. Congratulations to all of the teams, especially to the first-place team members. The judges commended the teams on their innovative solution, their realistic and comprehensive analysis, and how they handled the Q&A session.
