The Year in Palmatier: a career research award and two best papers

Robert Palmatier

It’s been a banner year for Robert Palmatier, the John C. Narver Endowed Professor in Business Administration, professor of marketing, and founding research director of the Center for Sales and Marketing Strategy at the University of Washington Foster School of Business.

Palmatier received the 2019 Vijay Mahajan Award for Career Contributions to Marketing Strategy, a singular honor from the American Marketing Association recognizing his influential scholarship in in the field.

He also won this year’s Louis W. Stern Award for the enduring impact of his 2013 Journal of Marketing paper, “Relationship Velocity: Toward a Theory of Relationship Dynamics” (with Mark B. Houston, Rajiv P. Dant and Dhruv Grewal).

And he earned the 2019 William R. Davidson Award, honoring the year’s best paper in the Journal of Retailing, for his 2018 work, “The Effect of Online Shopping Platform Strategies on Search, Display, and Membership Reviews” (with Ju-Yeon Lee, Eric Fang Er, Jisu Kim and Xiaoling Li).

This comes after Palmatier’s 2018 award haul that included the Robert D. Buzzell Best Paper Award from the Marketing Science Institute (MSI), the Harold H. Maynard Best Paper Award from the American Marketing Association (AMA). The AMA also listed him the 10th most prolific marketing researcher in the world in the journals that matter most—the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science and the Journal of Consumer Research—over the period from 2008 to 2017.

Palmatier is co-editor of the Journal of Marketing, the premier journal in his discipline. He recently finished his term as editor-in-chief for the Journal of Academy of Marketing Science.

Award-winning career

Since joining the Foster School in 2007, Palmatier has won two Maynard Awards, two Buzzell Awards, five Louis W. Stern Awards, and a Sheth Foundation/Journal of Marketing Award.

For his impactful research in the marketing strategy, sales channels, relationship marketing and loyalty programs, he was listed as a highly cited research (top 1 percent) by Clarivate Analytics and elected a Faculty Fellow of the Direct Selling Education Foundation and the Institute for the Study of Business Markets in 2017.

Early in his career, the former Naval officer and Fortune 500 senior executive was named a Marketing Science Institute Young Scholar and received the Varadarajan Early Contribution to Marketing Strategy Resource and SMA Palgrave Promising Young Scholar Awards.

At the Foster School, Palmatier has won the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research and the Dean’s Leadership Award.

He has also won MBA Professor of the Year, Robert M. Bowen EMBA Excellence in Teaching and PhD Mentoring Awards at Foster.

Palmatier has published more than 60 papers in peer-reviewed academic journals and nine books.
