Agrawal awarded by American Marketing Association for exemplary research and mentoring
Nidhi Agrawal, the Michael G. Foster Professor of Marketing and International Business at the University of Washington Foster School of Business, has received the 2017 Erin Anderson Award from the American Marketing Association (AMA) Foundation.
The award was established in 2008 to honor the late Erin Anderson, a respected scholar from INSEAD whose research made significant contributions to the marketing discipline. Recipients are chosen based on the impact of their research publications and of their mentoring of doctoral students and junior faculty.
“Professor Agrawal has advanced the profession through her innovative work and has made transformative contributions to the marketing discipline,” said Russ Klein, CEO of the American Marketing Association.
Early contributions
Agrawal is the consummate scholar and mentor. Her research earned early acclaim. She was selected to be an AMA-Sheth Doctoral Consortium Fellow in 2003 and received the Stern Doctoral Research Award in 2006 while working on her PhD in marketing at New York University.
During her early career at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School, Agrawal served as the McManus Research Chair in 2006 and from 2009-2011.
She was named a Marketing Science Institute Young Scholar in 2011. She joined the Foster School’s Department of Marketing and International Business in 2012.
Agrawal’s courses in consumer behavior and marketing management are complemented by her award-winning research that examines two universal topics: emotions and goals in consumer information processing, and self-regulation and goals in health communications.
The winner of the 2014 Early Career Award from the Association for Consumer Research (ACR) has already published more than 20 papers in the most influential marketing journals.
Leader and mentor
Beyond her own scholarly product, Agrawal also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Consumer Research and the Journal of Public Policy and Marketing, and previously the board of Journal of Consumer Psychology. She is an ad hoc reviewer for a dozen additional journals, organizations and competitions.
At Foster, she has also become known as an invaluable mentor to many doctoral students and junior faculty.
Agrawal has twice won the school’s PhD Mentoring Award (in 2014 and 2016). She has been an invited AMA-Sheth Doctoral Consortium Faculty Fellow five times (2008, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017), and an invited Faculty Fellow at the Association of Consumer Research (ACR) and Society for Consumer Psychology (SCP) Doctoral Consortiums nine times (across 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017). She organized the first mid-career mentorship forum for the ACR in 2013. And from 2013 to 2015 she was the primary mentor of the UW’s Consumer Research on Emotions and Well-Being Lab.
