Barcelona: A Moment in Time
Guest Post By: Remmy Ndegeah, a Senior studying Finance and Information Systems. He is a Global Business Center Study Abroad Scholarship Recipient, and he studied abroad through ALBA Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain, during Autumn Quarter 2023.
Studying in Barcelona, Spain, was an amazing part of my college journey that left an unforgettable mark on my undergraduate experience. Through the ALBA study abroad center, a partner program with the University of Washington Foster School of Business, I immersed myself in a diverse academic environment. The week unfolded with classes scheduled from Monday through Thursday, providing a structured academic routine. Fridays were lecture-free, which gave us opportunities to explore and travel to different cities and countries, fostering the possibility of adventurous three-day weekends.
One of the highlights of my study abroad experience in Spain was the joy I found in the affordability of items, a pleasant contrast to the United States. This allowed me to try many local foods and experience the city’s culture. Cozy cafes and street markets quickly became my favorite go-to destinations, providing a taste of the local lifestyle. The academic facet of my experience was also enjoyable. I had enrolled in 4 courses, which consisted of 2 upper division business courses and two finance elective courses. The professors at the ALBA center were not only knowledgeable but also friendly and supportive. Their guidance played a pivotal role in enhancing my learning experience throughout the quarter. Engaging with diverse groups of people added a unique aspect to my education, exposing me to various perspectives and cultivating a global outlook.
Beyond academics, the study abroad program organized many activities that enhanced my overall experience. The program aimed to foster a holistic learning environment, from cooking classes to city bike tours. Particularly noteworthy were the Friday group excursions led by the ALBA faculty, allowing us to travel and explore different areas in the Spanish region. Taking part in these excursions motivated me to continue exploring and further learn more about Spain’s rich history and visit iconic landmarks such as the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, both masterpieces designed by the renowned Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí. Engaging in these activities strengthened my appreciation of Spanish culture and provided a unique perspective beyond traditional classroom learning.
My study abroad experience in Barcelona was a seamless blend of academic rigor and cultural immersion. It expanded my horizons and offered a foundation for my personal development. The memories of exploring historic sites, indulging in diverse dishes, and building connections with people make this trip a remarkable chapter in my college journey. Overall, studying abroad was undeniably one of my favorite and most transformative experiences during my time in university.
