Seattle Growth Podcast Extra: growth, arena plans and the city budget
In this special episode of the Seattle Growth Podcast, Seattle’s budget director and a University of Washington expert discuss how growth and the potential for a new sports and entertainment arena will affect the city budget.
Ben Noble, director of the City of Seattle Budget Office, explains how growth affects the resources available to the city and how these resources get deployed. He describes the costs of accommodating more people and businesses, and predicts whether growth will mean better infrastructure and services.
Justin Marlowe, the Endowed Professor of Public Finance and Civic Engagement at the UW’s Evans School of Public Policy and Governance, discusses his headline-making study on the budgetary effect of the city’s arena choice. Marlowe’s analysis suggests that constructing a new arena in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood could generate $67 million more revenue for the city’s general fund than a competing proposal to renovate Key Arena.
