David Burgstahler to serve as president of the American Accounting Association
David Burgstahler, the Julius A. Roller Professor of Accounting at the University of Washington Foster School of Business, will serve as president-elect of the American Accounting Association (AAA) for the 2015-16 academic year and as president for the 2016-17 academic year.
The AAA, founded in 1916, is the primary professional association of accounting academics in the United States and throughout the world. The AAA publishes The Accounting Review, one of the discipline’s most influential journals, as well as a number of other peer-reviewed scholarly journals.
“Throughout his career, Dave has brought acclaim to the Foster School through his highly cited research,” says Foster School Dean James Jiambalvo. “He’ll do the same with his leadership of this important organization.”
Burgstahler joined the Foster School faculty in 1981 after earning his PhD in accounting at the University of Iowa.
He has been a prolific and influential researcher in accounting, focusing on the areas of firm valuation, earnings management, and the relation between accounting information and security prices.
For his research and teaching, Burgstahler has received numerous awards. He was most recently selected a 2014 Schoeller Senior Fellow, which provided funding for his research in the practice of size management by European firms to avoid the costs associated with mandatory audits and financial disclosures.
In 2002 he received the AAA-AICPA Notable Contribution to the Accounting Literature Award for his 1997 Journal of Accounting and Economics paper (with Ilia Dichev), “Earnings Management to Avoid Earnings Decreases and Losses.”
At Foster, Burgstahler won the Andrew V. Smith Faculty Development Award in 1994 and 2008 and the Dean’s Research Award in 1998. He was named Beta Alpha Psi Professor of the Year in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2001.
No stranger to academic service, Burgstahler is currently an editor of The Accounting Review and previously served as associate editor of the journal Accounting Horizons (1997-2000), on the editorial boards of The Accounting Review (1983-86 and 1992-03) and Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory (1986-1994), and on the board of referees of Accounting and Business Research (1988-92).
Burgstahler served as the Foster School’s associate dean for masters programs and executive education from 2002-04 and as acting dean in 2005. And from 2007-09, he was vice-president for publications at the American Accounting Association.
