Accounting Students Offer Free Tax Help

Starting in January 2018, accounting students in the Foster School of Business will once again assist low- and middle-income community members in filing their 2017 tax returns. At our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site, hosted on campus within Paccar Hall, IRS-certified accounting students provide pro bono tax preparation services. The VITA site benefits the student volunteers, who confront a variety of tax issues that complement their classroom-based education. The VITA site also allows student volunteers to meet members of Seattle’s vibrant community and see first-hand how their education at Foster can be used to meaningfully give back. In our inaugural 2017 on-campus VITA campaign, student volunteers provided adept tax assistance to 700 low- and middle-income families of King County. In addition to receiving adept tax assistance, these families also received tax refunds of approximately $1 million.
