Seattle Growth Podcast 5.9: music, poverty and homelessness

The sacrifices required to make it in the music business can leave an artist on the edge of poverty and homelessness. Or sometimes, over the edge.

Episode 5.9 of the Seattle Growth Podcast connects the themes of season 4 (the past, present and future of music in Seattle) and season 5 (the homelessness crisis) in experiential and data-driven ways.

Seattle vocalist and dancer Anthony “RenaGade” Briscoe, now on the cusp of a breakout with his “soul punk” band Down North (whose song “Heartbreaker” plays in the podcast), opens up about his own struggles with poverty and homelessness in the Seattle region.

And noted author Scott Allard dispels some myths associated with poverty, describes which programs are effective and which programs build a poverty trap, and offers actions you can take to help improve your community. Allard is a professor of public policy and governance at the University of Washington’s Evans School of Public Policy and Governance, a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program, and a primary investigator of the Family Self-Sufficiency Data Center at the University of Chicago.
